No, it isn’t.
I’ll tell you why in a second.
Right now, I’m sitting in the crowd right now at ICON – Infusionsoft’s yearly conference (an email marketer’s dream) – and there’s a lot of talk about knowing your ‘Why’ going on.
Which is funny, because just two years ago I sat in the same crowd and Simon Sinek was the keynote speaker (if you’re not familiar with him, he’s the author of the book Start With Why – which I highly recommend for everyone – entrepreneur or not).
At the time, my ‘why’ was a little different.
I was in business with my former girlfriend and was doing everything I could just to keep her happy.
I’d apologize for things that weren’t my fault, take constant criticism, and mold myself to hers.
Complete pushover I was.
I lost my ‘why’ and made her it instead of keeping the bigger picture in mind.
And I see entrepreneurs doing the same thing with their customers these days:
They apologize for emailing more than once a week, listen to their customer’s every word (which is important, but is to be taken with a grain of salt), and change themselves to be “cool” with their audience.
That’s no way to do business.
Instead, you need to have a bigger purpose in mind.
It might be your family or doing fun stuff with them, material things, or experiences.
Whatever the case, goals and missions are never monetary – they’re much deeper and emotional.
As for SnapChat being a “substitute” for list-building…
Me thinks not.
Because, while it’s cool and fun (and even I use it), it’s someone else’s land.
And if you’re an entrepreneur, wasn’t your goal to be in charge of your destiny?
That’s what you get with an email list…
So don’t go getting distracted with the little white ghost.
Instead, go get Start With Why and thank me later.
