I didn’t die (i think)

Sooo…

For the last year (or so) I’ve sent out daily – or at least weekly – updates from me on things like business, podcasting, email list-building, and email marketing.

And I kinda just stopped emailing a few months back.

I was off to do soul searching, etc.

Anywho…

While I stopped mailing you guys, I did start mailing another list I made “by hand.”

… and I also started a vlog, started a new diet (already down 10!), and planned my first charity event (it was Friday, vlog coming this week!).

What I found after looking into the deep, dark depths of who I am is simple:

1 fish, 2 fish, 3 fish, more.

I live by a basic rule online – it’s this:

To grow an audience, go where they already are.

Example?…

You could spend all day at the lake fishing and not catch a single flounder…

Or,

you could wait for feeding time

(and feeding season)

hang out with some bait,

and be full all winter.

One approach might catch you some fish

and the other will have you running into issues of having too many fish.

Which problem do you want?

When you approach your list-building like this you’ll be able to quickly eliminate strategies that won’t yield lost of subscribers and focus on the ones that do.

One of the quickest ways you can build your list:

Re: Combating imposter syndrome

In response to last week’s email on the “imposter syndrome” from subscriber Rouge:

“Really really really timely email. Spent the last 4 weeks struggling to press send on an event I’m running with creative experts… Compared and undervalued myself way too much. Just sent out the invites and BAM already locked in our first speaker. Thanks for your honest emails.”

The good part is that they’re getting even more honest.

I’ve recently been playing around with more video…

… and let me tell you what kinda time commitment is involved there.

It makes me like email even more.

BUT

There’s nothing like talking to an empty room.

We’ll all have go through a stage like this at one time or another,

which is why I put such an emphasis on building your email list.

For instance,

I’m putting my vids on YouTube at a time where a lot of peeps aren’t happy with them.

Why?

Because they rely on YouTube to give them money from ads

and since YouTube can change the rules whenever they please

they’re left back to where they started.

Any who,

let’s be thankful that isn’t us.

Back to the “imposter syndrome”…

My friend Navid and I recently sat down to talk about something that’s little discussed in the online business space:

confidence.

^^it’s really the answer to overcoming a lot of the moment-to-moment ups and downs we experience as entrepreneurs.

More:

Navid recently gathered all the heavy-hitters to discuss what it takes to rapidly build an email list and monetize it for his upcoming List Building School.

From being featured I know how much you’re going to learn

AND

since I know what it means to invest in your self as someone who spends tens of thousands of dollars on my own self-education…

“I can make you a success story overnight”

My buddy Andrew explained to me awhile back that he’s been helping some non-profits

and he just got on the board of a new one.

While in his first meeting with them they explained their hefty fundraising goal

but went on to focus on their logo,

slogan,

and a bunch of other minor (and not important) details.

Reminds of most entrepreneurs who spring up overnight and expect to be making money the next day.

It doesn’t work like that amigo.

You see,

just like america is being marketed to be skinny,

stupid,

and to follow the heard –

entrepreneurs are being told it’s possible to make money over night simply by joining the latest social media revolution,

doing webinars,

or making a course.

(of course without any experience, audience, or money)

They get their hopes up

The truth is that it takes two things:

Hard work & focus.

It’s about laser-lining your marketing efforts so that you only speak to the ideal people and cutting away the fat.

I floundered around for years going from course to course and expert to expert trying to find the way…

What’d I do once I figured “it” out?

I started documenting it and putting it here.
