Only 11 days late – but here are my predictions for the landscape of running an online business in 2016:
1) The beginning of “Social Media Shaming”
I expect this to play out just like cigarettes over the last decade.
A few years back I noticed how much people love posting about “how bad their life is” or talking about things they have no control over.
Little by little people are starting to disconnect from Facebook and the like – and I hear grumblings of a movement starting.
Everything in life is like a pendulum – and social media is no different.
We’ve gone to the far right, and now it’s time to swing back.
2) Email performs better than ever
A revelation has taken place over the last year or so…
And it’s all about building an email list.
However, that’s just the start.
It’s not just having a ‘big list’.
It’s not about just ‘emailing them’.
It’s about building a responsive, effective, enthusiastic following that gives you permission to connect with them.
And (if done right) market products to them that improves their life.
If 2015 was the year of segmentation, then 2016 is the year of responsiveness.
3) Live streaming & video take off
We’ve already seen the start of this and it’s just the beginning.
I don’t have many “future thoughts” on this (I’m no Nostradamus) – just experience, and here’s what I’ve noticed…
Many of you found me on Periscope (hi) – and have been more excited to learn, implement, and buy from me than any other traffic sources I’ve used.
(and I’m hearing the same from my clients with their live streaming success)
Being on video live and interacting with people curious about your topic creates the kind of transparency we are starved for these days.
You just can’t be fake when you’re live and on camera.
Which leads us to number 4…
4) Transparency on and offline wins
A lot of marketers online say that your audience needs to “know, like, and trust” you.
I call BS.
I know plenty of people I like that I’d never buy from.
On the other hand, if you gain my trust and respect I won’t even read your product descriptions.
I just buy and save the time.

Because people today are hungry for a real connection with authentic people who hold nothing back – and they’ll gladly invest in their products and services while questioning everyone else.
